Slate is a natural organic rock that has been used through the ages to make properties watertight as it is a hard durable rock impervious to water and has been used as waterproof covering to protect your home . Roofing slates, are installed by a slater or roofing contractor . Slate has a natural grain, which make it possible to split the stone into thin sheets used for roofing . Slate has a natural appearance with a chamfered edge shedding the water away from the roof . Slate is particularly suitable as a roofing material as it has an extremely low water absorption rate , less than 0.4%, which makes it resistant to frost damage and ideally suited for slate roofing.
Slate are usually fixed either with nails, or with hooks as is common with Spanish slate. Fixing the slate is typically with double nails onto timber battens (England and Wales) or nailed directly onto timber sarking boards (Scotland and Northern Ireland). Nails are traditionally of copper, although there are modern alloy and stainless steel alternatives. If the roof is slated properly it should provide a long-lasting weather tight roof with a lifespan of around 80–100 years.
